The season was generally disappointing. The loss of experienced First Grade players like Club Captain, Hall O'Meagher (frequently unavailable through work commitments); Anthony McQuire (attracted to Weston Creek); Jeff Hargreave (moved to Sydney); Ben Warren and Peter Grant (long-term injuries); Dean Buckmeister (frequently unavailable); served to compound the other major off season losses of Peter Solway (retired) and Colin Smart (removed to Melbourne). Matthew William was also unavailable for many competition rounds due to his selection in his Malaysian National team, where he has performed with great distinction.
All these factors combined to leave our 'Shop Window' team rather threadbare in the Two-Day Competition, with this situation impacting down through the various Grades. A marked difference in the First Grade performances was displayed in the One-Day Competition with an infusion of experienced players in to the team as their availability permitted. 
Daniel Pascoe was a stand-out. His left arm finger spinners saw him a major force at the bowling crease. He captained the ACTCA U 17 Representative team, won selection in the ACTCA U 19s, and finished the season gaining selection in the ACT Comets' Senior side which beat the AIS team. At the ACTCA Annual Presentation Awards, Daniel won the ACT U17 Player of the Year Trophy. With informed guidance, I believe he could develop into a top-flight First class-level all-rounder.
Brentyn Wilson (U 19) and Daniel King (U 17) were also selected in ACTCA Representative teams. 1st Reserves Captain, Andrew Heathwood, was co-coach of the U 17s.
Michael Watter led the batting and bowling averages with 352 runs @ 29.3 and 15 wickets @ 23. Ben Constance scored the most runs with 443 @ 24.6 whilst Daniel Pascoe claimed 23 wickets @ 28.4.
Despite major personnel fluctuations from First Grade down, the 1st Reserves were in the hunt for a Finals berth until beaten by eventual Premiers, Tuggeranong, in the last minor round.
In limited appearances (after gaining a place in the Firsts) Michael Ireland scored 186 runs @ 23.25 to lead the averages with Troy Sloan scoring 253 runs @ 19.5. Steve Broadbent took 20 wickets @ 14.5 to lead the bowling from rising start Bryn Evans who took 23 wickets @ 15.1.
The Thirds finished 7th, and the Fourths hopes of a Finals berth were dashed when the last minor round match was washed out. Concentration, building innings, and development of partnerships, which come under the heading of 'mental application' were areas of the game where we were found wanting, not giving our captains and bowlers decent scores to work with. Just how many times did we top 200 runs, or occupy the crease for 100 or 80 overs? Across the Grades, there were many matches where we would have given blood for an extra 20 or 30 runs. 
In Third Grade, Michael Whyte unfortunately was injured halfway through the season but still managed to lead the averages with 182 runs @ 26 from Vikas Godara with 188 runs @ 14.5. Gavin Denett took 17 wickets @ 6.5 from only 6 matches. Main support was from fellow spinner Laurie Whyte with 18 wickets @ 23.7.
For Fourth Grade the captain led the way with 380 runs @ 34.5 whilst "old-timer" Geoff Pryor took 20 wickets at a miserly 9.2.
Our defending Premiers, Fifth Grade, reached the Semi-finals of both competitions against Queanbeyan, but lost both due to poor batting. A batting collapse when chasing a target of 90-odd in our second innings against Queanbeyan of the 2-Day competition put paid to our hopes of defending our title. Dick Ireland's memorable, dogged defence of his wicket laid the foundation for our first innings. Campbell Spencer top-scored, but used all his luck for the next ten years. There are some balls a batsman just cannot possibly loft behind square leg. Don Lovie provided stubborn resistance in our second innings, but to no avail. Dave Hudson made his mark on Queanbeyan by hospitalising their opening batsman Ashley King with his second ball. King is reportedly still receiving dental treatment, four months on.

Captain Wayne Threlfall scored 275 runs @ 21.2 with support from Ken Pritchard's 254 runs @ 31.8. Richard Ireland continued to bamboozle taking 44 wickets @ 10.3 from Peter Foley with 28 wickets @ 12.5.
Last season we fielded only one team in the City and Suburban Competition, in Third Grade. The team, too, was plagued with a high turnover of personnel, and finished eighth out of ten --- well out of the money. Antony Thompson took over the captaincy mid-season and scored 213 runs @ 23.7 to lead from the front. Peter Moore captured 10 wickets @ 22.0.

Although most teams improved on the previous season this was not reflected in results which led to another disappointing season with no teams making the semi-finals. Many games were lost by a handful of runs or a wicket with the general perception being that teams need to be allowed to stabilise their personnel over a season.
Peter Foley was awarded the Peter McCullagh medal for services to sport by the ANU.
Dave (PTB) Mahon worked his way into First Grade by the end of the season after promising scores in the lower grades to pick up the Most Improved Award.
There were few highlights for First Grade with the most notable being a win over Tuggeranong and a "come-from-nowhere" tie with Goulburn. With 14 runs to win and 2 wickets in hand Goulburn's last over went 6-6-1-w-w.
The leading batsman was Ben Constance with 293 runs @ 20.9 followed by Andrew Heathwood with 285 runs @ 19.0. The bowling honours went to Daniel Pascoe with 24 wickets @ 28.1.
In Second Grade, consistent opening batsman Michael Ireland scored 314 runs @ 20.9 with able support from an improving Sam Headon with 245 runs @ 20.4.
Long time quick Chris Emery snared 25 wickets @ 20.1 with the main support coming from newcomer A. Gay with 18 wickets @ 19.8.
 
Third Grade looking confident
Third Grade continued their improvement from the previous year and have a number of bright prospects for the future. However, it was "old-timer" Laurie Whyte who captured the batting, 198 runs @ 24.8, and bowling, 21 wickets @ 20.9, honours. Geoff Foley scored 205 runs @ 20.5 with two good scores at the end of the season.
Danny Cook took 15 wickets @ 16.9 after reverting to off-spin when a bad back threatened his bowling career.
Fourth Grade lacked batsmen capable of occupying the crease and spent most of their matches defending low totals. The leading batsman was captain Wayne Threlfall with 183 runs @ 13.1. Geoff Pryor added some steel in limited appearances to score 119 runs @ 23.8.
The bowling was always under pressure but Phil Rochford took 16 wickets @ 14.4 and Brad McKay 15 wickets @ 18.6. Ajit Khinda took a hat-trick against Ginninderra.
 
Fifth Grade prepares for the final match of the season
Fifth Grade started the season well and were challenging for the lead in both competitions in the fist half of the season. However, loss of players and luck saw them miss the semi-finals altogether. The second half of the season was made up of many narrow losses often after suffering the worst of the conditions.
Antony Thompson led the batting, with 358 runs @ 29.8, and had a particular liking for the short square boundaries at Forestry. Captain Rob Preston scored 287 runs at 22.1 to lead from the front.
In the bowling, Peter Foley profited from Richard Ireland's regular promotion to Fourths and took 33 wickets @ 12.9. Richard still managed to take 13 wickets @ 17.3 from limited appearances. Bowling highlights were Peter Foley's 11 wickets against Easts, including a 7/58 and Tom Bryan's masterful display of swing bowling against Tuggeranong which netted a career-best 7/34.

Sixth Grade started the season well and continued to be in semi-final contention until loss of players to higher grades finally cost them a place with just a few rounds to go. Part-time captain T. Hulme with 139 runs @ 13.9 led the regular batsmen with Daniel Killaly scoring 167 runs @ 55.7 from 3 appearances. Sam Headon made a guest appearance and scored the club's only century of the season with 115* v Cook.
Kris Alexander took 19 wickets @ 12.7 with his slow swing just in front of fast bowler Manu Dang's 18 wickets @ 13.4.

Unfortunately, this was another poor season on the field for ANUCC with most teams coming last or almost last. Most teams struggled to maintain a solid core of players and build team morale. However, there were two major highlights.
The first was the 40th Anniversary Dinner held at Manuka Oval. As well as a chance to catch up with old team mates and friends the night also featured a very entertaining and humorous talk by Geoff Lawson. The main highlight of the evening was the announcement of the inaugural team of ANUCC Legends (see Legends) which honoured the champion players of the past 40 years. It is planned to add more players to the honour roll at regular intervals as well as acknowledging the players who have made the club what it is.
The other highlight was the performance of 6th Grade who, under the captaincy of Chris Boland, came from sixth place at Christmas to win the premiership. The team showed the benefits of having a stable squad as they rose in confidence and melded into a "never say die" team.
First Grade improved from the previous season but struggled to dismiss the opposition. Matt Williams as captain led from the front amassing 460 runs @ 25.5 including his first century from the club. He was supported by Victor Gnanadurai with 411 runs @ 20.55. Only Achaca Sirawardhane took more than 20 wickets with 21 @ 27.9.
Second Grade had a horrible season but did manage an astonishing victory on the day of the Anniversary Dinner (when Vic Cristofani made a guest appearance). The team struggled with bat and ball and were constantly disrupted by player unavailability. Troy Sloan was the only batsmen to pass 200 runs with 223 @ 14.9. Bowling was equally bad with Phil Rochford taking 12 wickets @ 14.3.
Third Grade, under new captain Laurie "Cube" Whyte, also struggled with 45 players appearing for the team during the season. Many new players were blooded and there were some promising signs. Geoff Foley made 96 (his highest score) on his way to taking batting honours with 227 runs @ 32.4. The "Cube" himself was by far the pick of the bowlers with 33 wickets @ 15.8.
Fourth Grade had lots of fun but not much success. Wayne Threlfall with 233 runs @ 15.5 was the leading batsman and Brad McKay took 15 wickets @ 24.6 to lead the bowling.
Just missing the finals was Fifth Grade. The highlight was a come from behind outright win against Boomanulla who, after leading on the 1st innings by 18 runs, were dismissed for 18 in the second innings. Kris Alexander with 299 runs @ 37.4 and Antony Thompson with 272 runs @ 30.2 were the only batsmen to perform consistently. Old stagers Richard Ireland, 26 wickets @ 14.3, and Peter Foley, 23 wickets @ 13.3, battled out the bowling honours again.
Sixth Grade became the hope of the club after Xmas as they strung together 9 wins in a row to reach the Grand Final of CC&SCA 5th Grade. The semi-final was close but the confidence gained led to a comprehensive win in the final (CC&SCA play an old-style final 4 system).

The club decided that a change of attitude was required if we were to become competitive again. A series of off-season sessions, facilitated by Brad McKay and Geoff Pryor, worked through a series of issues around training, selection, responsibilities, social activities etc. One of the results was a comprehensive Player's Handbook. These measures had an immediate impact on the club. Although no premierships were won the club appeared in both One Day and Two Day semi-finals in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades with 2nd Grade appearing in their first Two Day final for many years. This success was reflected in the ACTCA Club Championship where the club finished second after being wooden spooners for several years.
This new attitude also saw the club win the ANU Sports Club of the Year at the ANUSRA's annual awards night. Vikus Godara and Brad McKay also were recognised for their work for ANU sport (through the club) by being awarded the Peter McCullagh medal.
The season also saw the formation of a women's team as an official part of the club. With the addition of a second CC&SCA team the club fielded 8 teams for the first time in many years.
The season started with the return of the intra-club double wicket competition won by Jamie Droney and Zohair Hussain, Other social matches were played against Goulburn and against a Bradman XI at Bowral.
Although First Grade didn't climb the table as much as was hoped, they did improve considerably on recent seasons and even led the competition heading into Christmas. The batting was in general solid but the bowling was the main improvement with opposition teams usually being restricted to achievable totals. Stephen Sorbello with 459 runs @ 38.3, including a maiden 1st grade century, led the run scorers and was ably supported by Victor Gnandurai with 351 runs @ 25.1. Long time clubman Chris Emery took 18 wickets @ 23.6 and "Chiller" Sirawardhane 16 wickets @ 24.7 to lead the bowling attack.
The end of the season saw the departure of Matt William after a career with the club that saw him start in Fifth Grade and work his way up to First Grade Captain. The work done by Matt on and off the field will be missed but he has helped lay the foundation for future success across the club.
Second Grade, under the captaincy of Steve Broadbent, came from last the previous year to make the One Day semi-finals and the Two Day Grand Final. Some new players and a new attitude were behind the rapid improvement. A lack of experience in finals however probably cost them in the end.
In the One Day Semi-Final, ANU bowled Wests out for a very achievable 191 but were unable to recover from a bad start and collapsed for just 63 runs.

The Two Day Semi-Final showed that the team had learnt from the One Day experience and despite some wobbles they made a very competitive 248 based on a brilliant century by Andrew Gaye. In the field the team kept up its intensity and comfortably won with Bryn Evans turning in a marathon effort to bag 7 wickets.

The Two Day Final was against competition heavyweight Norths. Norths batted first and seized the initiative with a 205 run partnership for the second wicket. ANU fought back late on the first day and looked like being able to keep Norths to under 300 but a flurry of runs on the second morning saw them chasing 338. Mohsin Sheik bowled intelligently to snare 5 wickets. 
 
The run chase started badly with ANU slumping to 5/51 but, again led by Andrew Gaye, ANU fought back to eventually reach 191. Despite the loss, the team felt that the season had been successful but even more success was ahead.

Andrew Gay's end-of-season form saw him total 265 runs @37.9, including a century in the semi-final. Charles Craig scored 236 runs @39.3 and club stalwart Tray Sloan scored 272 runs @19.4.Vikus Godara's hard work on his bowling saw him take 30 wickets @16.2 and Bryn Evans recovered from mid-season slump to take 21 wickets @28.0. 
Third Grade went from wooden-spooners to Minor Premiers. The team was a good mix of some old heads and young up-and-comers, captained by Laurie Whyte, that came up with some great performances but was at times inconsistent. Like 2nd Grade the team was very inexperienced in finals which unfortunately resulted in embarrassing failures at the wrong times. 
In the One Day Semi-Final, ANU fell just short chasing 178 after a good performance in the field. Unfortunately, a middle-order collapse lost the batting momentum.

The story of the Two Day Semi-Final was similar but there was no recovery and 88 was never going to be enough. After restricting Eastlake to 162 with some fine bowling by DC and Hobo the plan was to score a quick 100 and knock them over cheaply but the second innings was only quick.

Glen Lang made a fine comeback with 322 runs @ 32.2 while new player Dave Loveder scored 344 runs @ 28.7 to show his promise. Dave Collings, another comeback player, took 26 wickets @ 15.0 while Dave "Hobo" Thomson used his experience and led the club with 34 wickets @ 8.6 .
Fourth Grade, led by the previous year's 6th grade premiership captain Chris Boland, was made up mostly of last year's 6th grade team plus a few remaining players from the previous team. Once again the team was very passionate and specialised in "come from behind" escapes. Somehow each match a different player would make a telling contribution that went some way to making up for their inexperience on turf.
The semi-final was disappointing as a tie was not sufficient to progress to the final. Nevertheless it was a great effort and continued a series of close encounters with Wests all year with ANU winning a 2-day match outright after losing on 1st innings and Wests winning the 2-day semi by 1 wicket.
Chris Boland scored 55 in a fine captain's knock but it was up the last wicket to steer ANU home. They fell agonisingly close but couldn't quite get there.

The sides met again in the Two Day semi-final. ANU batted first and despite some early wobbles made a very good 209 with Ajit Khinda making his highest score for the club. Manu Dang again took wickets with his surprising pace off a short run and with Ajit having a fine match ANU were only 1 wicket from victory. Unfortunately, this time it was Wests last wicket that took them to victory.

Chris Boland led from the front to score 358 runs @23.9 but Stan Stanfield scored runs every week to amass 531 runs @ 37.9. Manu Dang formed a fine partnership with Peter Moore to take 33 wickets @11.1. Nigel Tao took 20 wickets @ 16.7 and earnt the club's most improved player award.
Fifth Grade also had a successful season under the captaincy of Grantley "Barney" Butterfield. The team made the semi-finals of both competitions but an inexperienced middle-order was exposed in both matches by a very experienced Queanbeyan team. The team's strengths were the top-order batting with 3 players, Grantley Butterfield, Ben Smith and Joe Reid, making centuries and the bowling.
In the One Day semi-final ANU made a good start in the field but the Queanbeyan middle-order fought back well and looked like scoring in excess of 200. A hat-trick from Peter Foley ended their innings spectacularly and left ANU a challenging but not impossible chase. Unfortunately, the team was never able to put together a good partnership and take the initiative against very tight bowling. Eventually ANU was dismissed 44 runs short.

The 1st Innings of the Two day semi-final was virtually a repeat of the One Day semi-final except ANU batted first. Again the team struggled against tight bowling and lacked the required patience. Again the Queanbeyan middle-order saw them to the lead after an early collapse. ANU batted much more positively in the second innings to give themselves a chance. Queanbeyan needed 77 runs or to bat for just over an hour. Inspired bowling by Barney backed by great fielding saw Queanbeyan slump to 7/20 before they regrouped to hang on.

Grantley Butterfield led from the front with 332 runs @ 27.7 including a grade record 142 and 26 wickets @ 15.1. Veteran Antony Thompson scored 304 runs @ 33.8. Once again Richard Ireland with 33 wickets @ 7.7 and Peter Foley with 30 wickets @ 9.3 (including a hat-trick) battled out the bowling honours.
Sixth Grade Blue was led by Harry Greenwell and Paul Raets and was almost a completely new team compared to the previous year's premiership team. As such it stayed in the CC&SCA 5th Grade competition. The team was in contention for most of the season until a couple of close losses dropped them to 5th spot. The team played with much passion and determination.
Paul Raets led the way in the batting with 426 runs @ 47.3 including a century. Ben Smith scored 285 runs @ 31.7 before being moved up to 5th Grade. Steve Arthy took 19 wickets @ 16.1 while Dave Little also took 19 wickets @ 22.8.
Sixth Grade Gold was formed due to a large influx of new players, particularly from on-campus students. Unfortunately, this influx was not early enough to have the new team start at the beginning of the season. Instead they replaced a bye in the same grade as Blue but 5 games into the season. Due to this late start they were never really likely to make the semis but under the leadership of Craig "Brakelight" Reiher and Rob Ayson some good cricket was played and enjoyed.
The Nicholls brothers dominated the batting and the bowling with Alex scoring 216 runs @ 27.0 and Ben taking 21 wickets @ 18.1. Dean Hemana scored a century on debut.
For the first time, ANUCC fielded a team in the women's competition. (Note: A separate women's club was loosely affiliated with the ANUCC in the late 70's and early 80's.) While the team initially struggled both to be competitive and field a team they went on to finish 4th after winning 4 games in the latter half of the season. All the players improved under the guidance of Murray Radcliffe. Many thanks also to Brad McKay for his support.
Linda Bayfield led from the front with 134 runs @ 12.2, 14 wickets @ 20.7 and 6 catches. Peta Guy won the batting award with 178 runs @ 35.6 while Kristina Nagorka won the bowling award with 16 wickets @ 14.0. Lee Steele won the Most Improved player for her efforts in becoming a wicket keeper despite never having played before.
 

This season was supposed to be a season of consolidation of the improvements made the year before. In some respects it was but it will mainly be remembered for the "saga of the nets".
At the beginning of the season the existing training facility at South Oval was declared unsafe and training was moved to Daramalan College in Dickson, to whom we were extremely grateful. John Beaton did an amazing job of fund-raising and by the end of the season had assembled a funding package that will see the club start the new season back at South Oval with the best nets in Canberra.
Probably due to the disturbance of pre-season training, on the field the club seemed to take a while to get started with most teams not reproducing the performances of last year. The club made the 1-Day semi-finals in 2nds, 4ths and 5ths again but only 5ths made the 2-Day semi-finals and 6ths made their semis. 6th Grade went onto lose the Grand Final but 5th Grade went all the way to win the Premiership.
Social games were also played against Goulburn, a Bradman XI and Kiama.
First Grade were led by new player Randall Starr and started well in the Konica Cup and finished the 2 Day season well but had too many batting collapses in between to seriously threaten. Randall led from the front with 689 runs @ 38.3 with increasingly consistent support from Steven Sorbello (323 runs @ 19.0). Another new player, Michael Clark, took 20 wickets @ 16.0 and with Achaca Sirawardhane (22 wkts @ 22.2) were the foundation of a competitive bowling attack.
Second Grade were on target to reach the 2 Day semis until a series of draws caused them to miss out. The team did however make the 1 Day semi-final where they lost to Tuggeranong.

Once again, Michael Ireland was the best of the batsmen with 375 runs @ 37.5. Stephen Broadbent , who again captained the side, contributed 255 runs @ 23.3. Mohsin Sheikh, in his last season, took 20 wickets @ 16.2 with chief support from Vikas Godara's 19 wickets @ 16.6.
Third Grade were very disappointing as they went from minor premiers to wooden spooners. With the loss of a few players to 2nd Grade the batting really struggled to get going and despite some good bowling performances the side never scored enough runs. The batting award, which highlights the team's problem, was won by Karl Noronha with 154 runs @ 15.4 with the runner up being Kris Alexander 128 runs @ 14.2. 
The bowling of Peter Moore with 34 wickets @ 13.9 (including 11 wickets in a match, 6/30 & 5/23, vs Weston Creek) was a standout and shows how far he has improved in recent years. Rob Lancaster with 18 wickets @ 17.4 from limited appearances was also impressive.
Fourth Grade narrowly lost the 1 day semi-final. They missed out on the 2 day semis mostly due to draws caused by watering of the South Oval pitch on Saturdays by the contractor.

The batting was again headed by "Stan" Stanfield with 335 runs @ 27.9 , including 103 vs Wests, and ably supported by Antony Thompson with 171 runs @ 13.1. Captain Nigel Tao led from the front in the bowling with 21 wickets @ 18.6 though Bruce Garvie with 20 wickets @ 10.0 would probably have passed him if he had played the whole season. 
Fifth Grade made the 1 day semis and surprisingly won the 2 day premiership to win the club's only silverware fir the season. The team struggled with their batting until the last few games but came good at the right end of the season to comprehensively win the Final (somewhat aided by a semi-final walkover against Eastlake Emus).
In the 1 day semi, an unbeaten 55 run 9th wicket stand rescued Lions from a tricky situation. With the momentum from this partnership behind them their bowling and fielding proved much too good for ANU.

After a convincing outright win over Weston Creek in the last round, ANU entered the semis in 2nd place and went stright into the Final after Eastlake Emus forfeited.

ANU saved its best performance of the season for the Final. Wests batted first and looked on top at lunch. A dangerous 3rd wicket partnership was ended by old faithful, Dick Ireland, and then good fielding pressure and tight bowling was rewarded with the wicket of danger player, Grocott, to Laurie Whyte. Wests fought back again to be back on top at tea but again Ireland and Whyte broke through to dismiss Wests for 195.
The batting plan was to focus on scoring 25 for each wicket. This plan was executed flawlessly if slowly. ANU slowly wore Wests down in the field with a succession of good partnerships and eventually passed the total with only 4 wickets down after 107 overs. All the players contributed to a great win.

Despite winning the premiership, there were no real standouts with the bat with Alex Nicholls scoring 244 runs @ 24.4 and Dave Zakharoff 220 runs @ 18.3 leading the pack. Bruce McKenzie achieved a rare feat by carrying his bat against Ginninderra.
The old stalwarts of Peter Foley with 34 wickets @ 9.6 and Dick Ireland with 21 wickets @ 13.0 again led the bowling but Fred Ford started late and was closing fast at the end of the season aided by a 10 wicket haul (4/18 and 6/6) against Queanbeyan. Dick's bag include 7/25 against Ginninderra.
Sixth Grade struggled early in the season but finished strongly to make the finals. In the Minor semi-final they struggled early in chasing 99 but a fine captain's knock by Don Lovie saw them home. Similarly in the final, chasing a meagre 84, an early collapse was steadied by Ragu Dang with ANU sneaking home by 2 wickets.

The Grand Final was a see-sawing affair with a disappointing ending. ANU batted first and a fine innings of 65 by Ajit Khinda saw ANU post a respectable 175. Unfortunately, Ajit was unable to bowl due to cramps and Workers were able to exploit his absence to recover from 6/66 and 9/160 to win off the last over.

Ash Muller had a superb year with the bat amassing 429 runs @ 39.0 with captain Don Lovie scoring 324runs @ 23.1. Ajit Khinda, who was unable to bowl in the Grand Final, due to cramps, took 30 wickets @ 8.9 including a hat-trick against Panthers. Manu Dang continually surprised batsmen with his pace off a short run to finish with 33 wickets @ 23.1.
This year Seventh Grade were captained by Aidan Whittle and, while never threatening to make the finals, finished in a respectable mid-table position. As usual this team suffered the most from player absences in higher grades and the captain had a difficult job which he handled well.
Tim McLaughlan emerged as a potential new batting star with 278 runs @ 39.7 including 103* against Kaleen. Craig Reiher continued his improvement scoring 190 runs @ 17.3 (including his first 50 ever). Dave Little took 15 wickets @ 9.3 before being promoted to 3rd Grade and the club welcomed back Andy Ragg who took 12 wickets @ 14.9.
In the Women's Grade, ANUCC were in the running to make the Final (only top 2 teams progress) until the last couple of rounds, despite struggling to field full teams each week. The team improved steadily under the guidance of Murray Radcliffe. 
Kirrily Boyd, in her first year with the club, not only dominated the batting, 284 runs @ 35.5, and bowling, 21 wickets @ 9.9, but also was named the ACTCA Women's Cricketer of the Year. Peta Guy scored 179 runs @ 19.9 to be runner-up in the batting and captain Linda Bayfield took 13 wickets @ 14.7 to be runner-up in the bowling.

The club had its best year for quite a while with many teams making finals. Unfortunately, only one premiership was obtained when Fifth Grade went back-to-back. First grade, Second grade, Fifth Grade and the Women's team all made the Final of their competitions, with Fifth grade beating Wests again although in a revamped 40-over 1 day format other than the traditional 2 day format. First grade also made the semi-final of the Konica cup and Third grade made the Final of the One-Day competition. Second grade and Fourth grade made the semi-finlas of the Ond-Day competition.
Off the field the North Oval pavilion was finally opened after manyyears of work by the ANU Rugby club. This fine facility hosted our annual presentation night and will provide a home for the club's trophies, honour boards and memoribilia. The practice nets saga continued with the old nets demolished and plans and finances finalised. Hopefully by next season the new state-of-the-art facility will by complete. Will Sheridan, a new recruit from the South Coast, was selected in the Australian Under 19s team that played in the World Cup in Sri Lanka.
With the help of club captain Randall Starr, the club welcomed several new recruits from Melbourne and the Illawarra region. These new players, some local recruits and the core of last year's team propelled 1st Grade to their best season for many years. The team won through the local stage of the NSW Country cup to play in a carnival in Dubbo and Parkes over the Xmas break. Though they didn't progress to the final at the SCG it proved to a valuable team bonding and confidence building experience.
On their return the team qualified for the Konica Cup semi-finals where they met Weston Creek. An early onslaught by their batsmen set up a large total of 280. A total that was chaseable on the lightning fast Kingston outfield. However, despite a fighting innings of 137 by Randall Starr, not enough partnerships were established and ANU fell 30 runs short.

Undaunted the team qualified for the 2 Day finals for the first time for 7 years. Playing Tuggeranong the team got off to a bad start and were dismissed for just 80 in the first innings. Nathan Madsen led the fight back taking 5/37 to restrict Tuggeranong to 146. With Randall Starr scoring 48 and a mighty effort by the tail, Daniel Pascoe 52, Emmet Bronca 40 and Denver D'Cruz 28, ANU scored 265 leaving Tuggeranong 200 to win. Wickets fell steadily but with 2 wickets in hand and only 4 runs required ANU looked beaten. Up stepped Denver D'Cruz with 2 wickets in 1 over to snatch victory.

Randall Starr again captained the team from the front and his 683 runs @ 34.2 included 2 centuries. Unlike previous seasons he had solid batting support with Jarrad Loughman scoring 614 runs @ 43.9 and Jed Sawkins 529 runs @ 31.1. The bowling was also a strength this year with Denver D'Cruz taking an impressive 52 wickets @ 17.1, a revitalised Daniel Pascoe taking 44 wickets @ 16.3 and Nathan Madsen 34 wickets @ 17.7.
 
Second Grade benefited from the improved depth of the 1sts to have a strong season climaxed by reaching the 2 day final. In the semi-final a fine 70 from Stephen Sorbello set up a 32 run lead on the 1st innings against Eastlake. After dismissing Eastlake for just 103 in the 2nd innings with Dave "Hobo" Thompson taking 5 wickets ANU looked set for an easy win. But at 8/28 chasing just 70 it looked like they had thrown it away. Up stepped veteran Troy Sloan. With good support from Vikus Godara he first steadied the ship then charged to the win.

The final however was a different story. Tuggeranong batted first and at 7/128 looked vulnerable. But a big partnership saw then bat until nearly lunch on the second day. The final target of 289 and the limited overs available saw ANU forced to take too many risks and finally succumb for 176.

Andrew Stead had a fine season both in front and behind the stumps scoring 388 runs @ 27.7, 18 catches and 3 stumpings. Tim Dennett with 317 runs @ 18.6 and Eddie Fitzgibbon with 236 runs @ 23.6 offered good support all season. "Hobo" Thompson bowled very well taking 30 wickets @ 13.2. Stalwart Chris Emery with 25 wickets @ 23.6 and captain Bryn Evans with 21 wickets @ 24.2 bowled many long spells to good effect.
 
Third grade was initially led by Jeremy Little before work took him away. Sam Bullock took over for the second half of the season. The team consisted mostly of seasoned players taking a step up to more competitive cricket. Many of the players were unaccustomed to batting on turf and the intensity of this level. This led to a few too many batting collapses and coupled with some bad weather, saw them miss the 2 Day finals.
 
In the 1 Day semi, Geoff Foley scored 38 and provided the stability for the more dashing players. Ash Muller scored a blazing 59 to give Wests a competitive total. Wests started well but a great spell by Sam Roggeveen followed by the spin twins, Chrius Peiris and Karl Noronha saw ANU home to an easy win.

The 1 Day Final at North Oval was initially delayed by a wet pitch but when play got underway, Eastlake posted 178 runs off 38 overs. Unfortunately the ANU chase started badly and the game was basically over in the first 15 overs with the score at 8-23.

Fourth grade had a "captain killer" of a season with many narrow wins and losses and a tie. They made the semi-finals of the 1 Day competition but missed out on the 2 Day semis.

Joe Laria continued his good form from the 5th Grade Final the season before to score 185 runs @ 16.8 with wicket keeper Brett McDonald assisting with 172 runs @ 17.2 in a welcome return to form with the bat. Craig Croxford returning from the UK scored 160 runs @ 17.8. Captain Rodney Sheils used his inswinger to scuttle many batsmen and took 28 wickets @ 9.7.
The Fifth grade competition was revamped (again) as a 40-over 1 day competition this year. ANU's team was significantly changed from the previous year's winnning team but still contained much experience bolstered by some new talent. The team gradually learnt how to play the format and with it's strong bowling lineup and new found opening batsman Rob Taylor (visiting from South Africa) finished the season equal 1st(second on quotient) with Wests.
The semi-final was a tense affair on a slightly rain affected O'Connor pitch. After bowling out Tuggers for just 70 with some brilliant bowling and fielding, ANU were in trouble at 5-34 before Stu Cameron and Matt McCorry got the team most of the way to the target.

The final against Wests was also tense but mainly of the sort "let's not lose to these guys". The team, under the astute captaincy of Antony Thomson, played its best match of the season. Wests batted first and were full of confidence following their 300+ score the previous week. ANU never let them settle in and dismissed them for just 154 with Stu Cameron taking 5/29. A few stumbles in the running department led to some nervous moments but Kris "Bunyip" Alexander with 30, Ameet Jamble with 25 and Stu Cameron with 16 not out along with 33 extras got us home.

The 5th Grade Champions
Fifth grade was captained for most of the season by Wayne Threlfall until he had to pull out due to work commitments. Antony Thomson made an able substitute. Rob Taylor showed his class in only 5 innings scoring 278 runs @ 69.5. Ever reliable Antony Thomson scored 270 runs @ 24.5 and Stuart Cameron scored 250 runs @ 22.7 and was not dismissed in the finals. Peter Foley again led the bowlers with 29 wickets @ 11.4 while Stuart Cameron was at times unplayable taking 23 wickets @ 9.2.
Sixth grade were unable to reproduce the form of the previous season after losing some players to higher grades. Their bowling was consistent but they suffered too many battibg consistencies to be contenders. Ironically, the highlight of the season was a batting highlight. Simon "Stan" Stanfield was a last minute callup and after convincing the captain to let him open scored the club's first double century. His 203* included 14 6s (also a club record).
Paul Raets was captain and won the batting award with 348 runs @ 24.9. He was ably supported by Ragu Dang with 209 runs @ 17.4. Ragu also performed well with ball with 18 wickets @ 17.8 and was backed up by Don Lovie with 18 wickets @ 20.7.
Liam Cosgrave led the Seventh grade team with great enthusiasm. This team is always difficult to lead as players can be called up due to higher grades' demands and variable availability but Liam built a solid core of players that played nearly every match and attended most trainings. While they didn't win many games they were usually competitive and enjoyed themselves immensely. Andy Ragg scored 295 runs @ 18.4 and took 23 wickets @ 15.6 in a fine all-round season. Liam with 286 runs @ 22.0 and 18 wickets @ 17.5 showed captaincy didn't affect his results. Alex Johnson with 20 wickets @ 9.9 and Tobias Brown with 19 wickets @ 18.5 helped give the team a strong bowling line-up.
In the Women's competition an increased emphasis on participation saw the team play a mixture of non-competitive and competitive games.This led to an influx on players, many with no cricket experience. The team improved markedly as the season progressed to finish 2nd.
The team easily won their semi-final against Tuggeranong with a superb performance in the field and a convincing batting performance by the openers.

The final was against perennial favourites Eastlake at Manuka Oval. Unfortunately, the occasion seemed to unnerve the team and they were bundled out for just 61 which Eastlake had little triuble chasing. The team will be much better for the experiencebut must be congratulated for their attitude on and off the field and their work effort at training.

Peta Guy, as captain, led from the front with 266 runs @ 29.6 and provided great stability in the middle order. Jane Curnow took 15 wickets @ 11.6 in her first year with the club. Anna Stewart had an excellent all-round year with 225 runs @ 25 and 11 wickets @ 20.5

The big news this season was the opening of the new "state of the art" practice nets after several years of dedicated work by John Beaton and Chris Emery. The nets were officially opened by Vice Chancellor Ian Chubb in the presence of players, sponsors, club and association representatives.
The club hosted the first Australian Over 60s Cricket carnival, providing grounds, food and drink, social functions and a trophy (a John Beaton special). The carnival was very successful and profitable (thanks to the many volunteers). 
The club also held its first Karaoke night (won by the 5th grade "shouters") and its now traditional Trivia night (thanks to the Droneys).
On the field the club won 2 titles, Fourth grade One Day and Seventh Grade (ACTCA Fifth Grade), and had 2 runners-up ,Fifth Grade and Fouth Grade Two Day. Fourth Grade,  Fifth Grade and Seventh Grade were minor premiers. Second  Grade and Third Grade made the semi-finals of the One day competition and Third Grade also made the semi-finals of the Two Day competition. The Women's team made the semi-finals of their 40 over competition.
Congratulations also to Chris Thompson who became the first player to score more than 1000 runs for the season.
First Grade had new captain/coach, Chris Mayles, who brought an added focus on fitness to the squad. Unfortunately due to a bad run of injuries and the loss of  a couple of games they should have won the team missed out on both Konica and Two day semi-finals. Scott Cameron, newly transferred from Norths, was the star of the batting with 710 runs @ 54.6. He was well supported by ever reliable Randall Starr with 468 runs @ 31.2 and evergreen Rob Regent with 289 runs @ 37.3. The bowling attack was most affected by injuries but a revitalised Daniel Pascoe took 37 wickets @ 10.6  just ahead of Nathan Madsen with 36 wickets @ 14.3.
Second Grade started strongly but were eventually impacted by the loss of personnel to First Grade and their own injury problems. Their string early form got them to a 1 Day semi against Eastlake but the weather conspired against them.

Michael Clark made a welcome comeback from injury to score 354 runs @ 32.2. Troy Sloan took over the captaincy and scored 267 runs @ 16.7 while Nisanh Rego came up from 3rds to score 232 runs @ 29.0. Steve Broadbent continued to beguile with his legspin taking 26 wickets @ 17.6. The fast bowlers shared the wickets with Cris Emery taking 17 @ 29.2, Vikas Godara 16 @ 12.8 and Dave Thomson 15 @ 17.2.
Third Grade made the semi-finals of both competitions where they lost both to a very strong Tuggeranong side. The side had a reasonable batting lineup with Dave Noble 281 runs @ 31.2, captain Sam Bullock 254 runs @ 21.2 and Geoff Foley 253 runs @ 19.5 all passing 250 runs for the season. The bowling was the obvious weak link with only Simon Campbell reaching 15 wickets (@ 24.9).

Fourth Grade, led by Don Lovie and Manu Dang, had their best season for several years making the grand finals of both competitions. In the 1 Day Final they played Queanbeyan captained by ex-ANU legend Peter Solway. His runout for a duck saw Queanbeyan restricted to just 126 runs. Although ANU had a slight stumble in the chase, in the end they won convincingly.

RESULT : ANU lost outright by 7 wickets
Chris Peiris scored 409 runs @ 27.3 and took 23 wickets @ 14.4 to have a fine all round season. The opening pair of Kris Alexander, 339 runs @ 26.1, and Ash Muller, 285 runs @ 25.9, guaranteed many good starts. The bowling was ably led by Manu Dang, surprisingly quick off a short run, with 49 wickets @ 9.5.
Fifth Grade was led by Antony Thompson in their quest for 3 premierships in a row. The competition was played in the same format as last year (40-over) and the team finished as Minor Premiers. The semi-final was washed out and for the third year in a row the Grand Final was against Wests.
Wests batted first but after an opening partnership of 59 they collapsed to be all out for 127. ANU were well placed at 3/80 until a collapse of 5/5 undid all the good work. Graham Fifield and Alex Johnson took the score to 118. The last wicket partnership looked promising but with 4 runs to win off 4 balls Graham hit a chip shot too well and too straight to be caught on the boundary.

Antony Thompson led from the front with 258 runs @ 21.5 with late season support from Graham Fifield's 191 runs @ 38.2. With Dick Ireland injured for most of the season, Peter Foley once again took the bowling honours with 38 wickets @ 7.3 with both Ben Nicholls and Alex Johnson taking 16 wickets @ 11.2 and 15.3 respectively.
Sixth Grade had a new captain, Matt Cousins, who was also new to the club. He did a fine job captaining a mix of old and new players but a lack of bowlers meant wins were few and far between. Matt himself scored 720 runs @ 48.0 and took 18 wickets @ 15.2 to have a memorable year. Matt Talbot successfully converted to cricket from baseball scoring 457 runs @ 26.8 (including a century) and taking 16 wickets @ 31.4. Both Matts ended the year in higher grades. Steve Lacey was the best of the bowlers with 21 wickets @ 18.6.
Seventh Grade, under the captaincy of Liam Cosgrave, completely reversed their previous season going from just 3 wins to just 3 losses and taking out the Minor Premiership and the Grand Final. The elimination final was very one-sided and set the scene for a clash with the second placed team, Brewers, and their prolific batsman D. Nielsen who scored over 900 runs for the season. He didn't disappoint and scored the bulk of Brewers' 213. A challenging target that became even more challenging at 2/5 with the 7s gun bat Chris Thompson one of the 2. Up stepped Jamie Droney to show that determination and experience can go a long way. His 125* run masterclass showed how to control the strike, bat with the tail and win will long be rememebered.

Chris Thompson had a phenomenal year with the bat scoring 974 runs with 3 centuries @ 57.3. Chris also took 26 wickets @ 10.2. Captain, Liam Cosgrave also did well with 528 runs @ 37.7 and 19 wickets @ 15.5. Jamie Droney, returned from umpiring, to score 481 runs @ 60.1. Part-time wicketkeeper,bowler and batsman Toby Dalwood scored 372 runs @ 26.6. James Ragg continued his improvement as a bowler to take 26 wickets @ 16.0.
The Women's team didn't quite reach the heights of the year before, going down in the semi-final to eventual winners Tuggeranong. Numbers continued to grow and the team played a mixture of Super 8s, 20/20 and 40 over cricket in an attempt to give all players a fair chance of playing.

Peta Guy again led the batting with 255 runs @ 28.3 with Anna Stewart scoring 206 runs @ 20.6. Jane Curnow took 23 wickets @ 8.5 and Meaghan Edwards 20 wickets @ 20.6 to lead the bowlers.

Third grade was the success story of the year as they took out the 20/20, 1 Day and minor premierships and made the Two Day semi-finals. Howver the rest of the club's results were disappointing.The early season was marked by poor weather, usually on a Friday night, but the drought continued. This contributed to, but was not the sole reason for,  poor training and social attendances. Players must start to realise that performance on the field is a direct reflection of activity off the field at both training, which builds skills, and social functions, which builds teams.
The club held an enjoyable if poorly attended traditional Trivia night (thanks to the Women's team) but did not hold a Xmas party. The annual Wests/ANU Barry Andrews trophy day was also poorly attended by ANU.
First Grade missed out on the semis in both the Konica and Two Day competition with most of the blame being laid at the door of the batsmen who consistently failed to support their captain and leading bat Randall Starr (603 runs @ 40.2). The bowlers kept ANU in the hunt in many games with Denver D'Cruz, 39 wkts @ 16.3, Daniel Pascoe, 36 wkts @ 13.3, and Nathan Madsen, 26 wkts @ 14.5, all having good years.
The team did manage to win the local section of the State Cup but are still seeking success at the the next stage and the holy grail of a match at the SCG. 
Second Grade missed out on both sets of finals as injuries and unavailabilities took their toll. The Ayre brothers led the way with the bat with Chris scoring 324 runs @ 21.6, Ben 286 runs @ 28.6 and Aaron 286 runs @ 26.0. Unfortunately their good work was usually undone by a weak tail. The team also struggled to dismiss the opposition with only Chris Emery, 23 wkts @ 16.8, and Neilish Chellapah, 20 wkts @ 13.8, taking 20 wickets.
Third Grade had almost a perfect season winning the 20/20, 1 Day and minor premierships before bowing out in the 2 Day semi agianst ex-Anu player Peter Solway. The team was a mixture of seasoned players dropping from 2s and up-and-comers and were ably led by Troy Sloan.
The 20/20 Final saw ANU win a runout-athon. Tuggeranong had 6 runouts in their innings and after a reaching 1/101 in 11 overs in the chase ANU stumbled across the line after 5 runouts.

After the 1 Day semi-final was washed out ANU progressed to the Final at ANU North on a sub-standard pitch. Bowling first Eastlake was restricted to 79 with Manu Dang taking 5/16 and Bryn Evans conceding just 6 runs off 10 overs. In reply, ANU was comfortably placed until a middle order collapse but some calm batting by youngster Jim Lever got ANU home.

The 2 Day semi-final was a a bit of a letdown. After surprisingly picking up the minor premeirship ANU met Queanbeyan in the semi at South Oval. Just like in last year's 4th grade Final it was Peter Solway, in an 88 run partnership with John Bull, who took the game away.

As can be expected in a successful team both batting and bowling were strong. Simon Campbell showed his increasing maturity as a batsmen scoring 363 runs @ 24.1 whilst old-stagers Troy Sloan, 267 runs @ 16,7 and Michael Ireland, 250 runs @ 14.7 offered great support. Bryn Evans, 25 wkts @ 9.0, and David Thomson, 20 wkts @ 14.2, showed their experience while Manu Dang took 20 wkts @ 14.2 in his first full year in 3s. 
Fourth Grade couldn't back up from the year before as most players moved up to higher grades. Many of the new players, under Matt Roper, struggled with their first year of senior cricket though showed signs of improvement towards the end of the year. 
Dave Bowen was the only batsman to score more than 150 runs with 168 @ 18.7. Similarly the bowlers struggled with Matt Roper, 13 wkts @ 20.4 and Peter Moore, 12 wkts @ 15.7, the leading bowlers.
Fifth Grade made the final for the 4th consecutive season against Wests but the result was the same as last year, a loss. In fact ANU finished 2nd in the 20/20, minor premiership and premiership.
In the 20/20 competition, ANU beat Wests and Weston Creek but lost to Queanbeyan in the final. Batting first ANU scored just 91 runs which was about 20 short of what was needed.

ANU batted first in the final but after a promising start the middle order got tied down by some good bowling. The final score of 147 was competitive but probably 20-30 runs short of a score that would have put pressure on Wests gun batsman. Which is how it turned out. The 3rd wicket partnership of 90 runs won Wests the match (unlike last year when 5ths felt that they lost the match).

The batting was solid all year with 4 players passing 200. Chris Howard showed his class with 247 runs @ 49.4 and he was ably supported by Greg Badcock, 222 runs @ 14.8, Graham Fifield, 220 runs @ 24.4, and Stuart Cameron, 219 runs @ 16.8. The bowling, on the other hand, was completely dominated by Peter Foley who took a career best 49 wickets @ 6.5.
Sixth grade was a disappointment. The team struggled all year to get enough players each week and consequently struggled in the field. Andrew Greaves scored 212 runs at the healthy average of 30.3 while Dane Morrisin scored a century in his total of 209 runs. Liam Curtis took 14 wickets @ 9.2 from limited appearnces.
Seventh grade had an almost complete change of personnel from the previous championship year. With a lot of first time players they struggled results-wise but enjoyed their cricket and were some of the most committed trainers. Toby Dalwood was the class batsman in the team with 162 runs @ 32.4 in only 5 appearances but Sean Gourlay has a good debut year making 151 runs @ 16.8. The bowling really striggled with only Tim Chandler, 10 wickets @ 29.9 reaching double figures. 
The women had a somewhat disruptive year with a new competition format favouring rep. cricket and 20/20 matches. Howver, they did make the semi-final again but with the same result as last year.

RESULT : ANU lost by 3 wkts
Peta Guy led the batting with 229 runs @ 25.4 with support from Anna Stewart, 186 runs @ 30.5, and recent returnee Kirrly Boyd, 183 runs @ 30.5. The bowling was probably the weak link with much improved Julia Garvey taking 9 wickets at 15.8.

The drought continued but with less Friday night rain than the season before. This led to much more batsmen friendly conditions and while several ANU players took advantage it exposed ANU's lack of bowling depth particularly in the higher grades. First, Third and Fifth grade made finlas of various types but the only victory was Third grade in the pre-season 20/20 competition.
First grade relied heavily on captain Randall Starr's batting. Randall scored a First grade record 1004 runs @ 77.2. Along the way Randall scored 4 centuries including 2 in a week against Norths. He also won the ACTCA Konica strike rate award. On the back of this, First grade reached the Konica Cup Final where they were beaten by Weston Creek.

Weston Creek scored a very good total of 275 but Aaaron Ayre and Randall Starr led a great chase with 151 run opening stand buit with Randall's departure for 95 the run-rate required started to rise and under pressure ANU steadily lost wickets to finish 19 runs short.

As mentioned Randall Starr scored 1004 runs @ 77. He was ably supported by a rapidly improving Mark Bennett, 350 runs @ 25, and visiting Zimbabwean international Friday Kasteni, 270 runs @ 20.8. (Though Friday probably learnt a lot from Randall on and off the field!). The lack of depth in the bowling showed up with only Nathan Madsen, 38 wickets @ 20.2, and veteran Vikas Godara, 23 wickets @ 26.4, taking more than 20 wickets for the season.
Second grade had a very disrupted season due to continual demands from First grade. This had most effect on their bowling where only captain Chris Emery with 18 wickets @ 21.6 and Matt Fennel with 10 wickets @ 16.9, reached double figures. This meant the team was often chasing large scores and though Michael Clark with 321 runs @ 45.9, Andrew Stead with 280 runs @ 35, and Richard Muir with 280 runs @ 28, performed admirably the batting was rarely consistent enough to win matches.
Third grade almost matched last year's performance by winning the 20/20, reaching the One Day semifinals and the Two Day finals.In the One Day Semi-Final the batting never recoverd from being 4/21 and only posted 154 thanks to a fine 58 from Brett Petersen.

In the Two Day competition ANU snuck into 4th place but always felt confident going into the semi as they felt they had the wood on the opposition. 200, with Chris Thomson scoring a slow but steady 70, on Chishlom 2 should never have been enough but finals pressure can never be discounted and the tight bowling eventually tolled on th eopposition who finished 14 runs short.

Third grade had depth in bowling and batting but also had standout performers in both. Chris Thomson scored 456 runs @ 35.1 including a century in the final. David Thomson with 264 runs @ 22 and Brett Petterson with 233 runs @ 23.3 offered string middle order support. In the bowling, captain Simon Campbell ledt the way with 35 wickets @ 13.9 ahead of Chris Peiris 14 wickets @ 18 and Nicholas Grant, 14 wickets @ 22.
Fourth grade had a very disappointing year. The club policy of introducing new players to senior cricket via this grade may need to be reconsidered as the team regularly suffered massive batting collapses and lacked experience and depth in bowling. Kris Alexander led the team for most of the season and scored 289 runs @ 26.3 with only 2 other batsmen passing 100 runs. He also led the bowling with 16 wickets @ 20.25, just ahead of Don Loview iwth 15 wickets @ 19.6. 
Fifth grade, for the 5th year in a row made the Final but for the 3rd year in a row lost, this time to newcomers the Lankan Lions playing as Eastlake. The team started poorly and were near the bottom of the competition after a month but from then on beat allcomers, except Eastlake, to finish as minor premiers. Greg Badcock took ocer as captain from Manu Dang due to work commitments after Christmas and led the team from the front with some stellar batting.

RESULT : ANU won by 114 runs
The Final, played at Chisholm, was a closer match thean it shoould have been. With ANU at 7/78 due to some good bowling and some poor shot selection the match was as good as over but a fighting rearguard action by Mal Green 55* and Stu Cameron 30 got the score to a defendable 8/171. Unfortunately, a couple of dropped catches meant no early breakthroughs and despite some tight bowling and Stu Cameron's 3/30, Eastlake reached the target with 4 wickets and 3 overs in hand. Eastlake were worthy winners as ANU had not defeated them in any match during the season including the 20/20 Final.

Greg Badcock has a stellar year with the bat, especially after Christmas, scoring 602 runs @ 43. Graham fifield continued to terrorise Queanbeyan and scored 446 runs @ 34.3. Geoff Foley scored 392 runs @ 35.6 and was sorely missed in the Grand Final which he missed due to injury.
Peter Foley topped the bowlers again with 36 wickets @ 10.6 but was pressed by Stuart Cameron, 30 wickets @ 13.3 and Malcolm Green, 23 wickets @ 16.3, in what was an effective if not pacy attack.
Sixth grade was a real disappiontment this year. After just a handful of games it was clear the club could not run both 6s and 7s so Sixth grade was withdrawn from the competition.
Seventh grade finished mid-table after threateningat times to make the semis. The team enjoyed their cricket under the captaincy of Corey Anderson. Sean Gourlay scored an impressive 396 runs @ 44 to lead the batting ahead of an evergreen Adrian Scott with 261 runs @ 43.5 and hard-hitting Matt Sutton with 212 runs @ 30.3. Their main weakness was a lack of depth in the bowling with Tim Chandler, 19 wkts @ 19.5, and Matt Sutton, 17 wickets @ 15.1, the only bowlers to take more than 15 wickets. 
The Women's team also struggled for numbers, perhaps due to a very poor competition format that had no competitive games of cricket until Decemeber due to an overemphasis on representative level matches. The team played most matchs with just 7 or 8 players including the semi-final (when the opposition even refused to allow ANU to field with players from another club to make it a better match).
A highlight, though, was their dismissal of Norths for just 3 runs (Norths had 8 players) including a spell by Jane Curnow of 3.1 overs taking 4 wickets for 0 runs.

Although the women only played 9 matches, Peta Guy scored 199 runs at 33.17 including 81* in the semi-final. Jane Curnow was consistent with both bat, 143 runs @ 28.6 and ball, 15 wickets @ 10.9.
The women also contributed greatly to the social life of the club by running a very successful trivia night and helping out with the annual dinner.

The season was our worst for a long time. The top 3 grades "won" the wooden spoon in the 2Day competition and even 1st Grade struggled to field a full side a times. 4th Grade and 6th Grade were minor premiers but crashed out in the finals series. In brighter news, Will Sheridan has successfully moved into the Victorian team.
In First Grade, ANUCC made the Super 6s stage of the Konica Cup where they went down to Weston Creek despite a fine century by Andrew Stead (100 off 83 balls out of a total of 186). The batting was very fragile all year and never really put the opposition under pressure despite some fine work by Nathan Docker (29 wkts @ 21.3) and Vikus Godara (27 wkts @ 17.7). Andrew Stead had a very good year though scoring 416 runs @ 27.7 and snaring 28 catches and 2 stumpings to arguable be the best keeper in the ACT competition. Nathan Docker backed up his work with the ball to score 341 runs @ 24.4.
Second Grade also struggled with injuries and high player turnover. Michael Ireland was his usual consistent self with 272 runs @ 22.7. A welcome newcomer, both on and off the field, was Tony Pick. On the field he scored 262 runs @ 65.5 and took 11 wickets @ 28.7 from just 6 matches. Off the field he was everywhere, helping with training, social events etc. Simon Campbell mixed captaincy with wicket taking to take 16 wickets @ 26.0.
Third Grade found scoring enough runs to be competitive in most matches to be beyond them and consequently suffered some crushing defeats. Only 2 batsmen passed 200 runs for the season wiith Chris Meers 217 runs @ 21.7 and Zaheer Alleem 212 runs @ 19.3. With small totals to defend the bowlers also struggled and Damien Carroll with 21 wickets @ 12.7 was the pick of the bowlers. A season best forgotten. 
Fourth Grade were one of the few shining lights in the club. The team, mostly made up of last year's 5th grade team, had an ordinary 1Day competition but emerged as Minor Premiers in the 2Day competition despite stiff competition from Wests and an ex-Comet (and ex-ANU 1st Grade) laden Queanbeyan. However, the semi-final match against Ginninderra was very disappointing. After easily beating them the week before in a 1Day game by 100 runs perhaps we took them too easily. The batting never really got going with only 2 partnerships greater than 20 and ANU totalling 136 on a very flat Kaleen pitch. At stumps Ginninderra were 3/47 and early wickets on the second morning were crucial. What followed was certainly one of the most disciplined and unlucky 2 sessions of cricket I have seen at the club. Cam Fox bowled 27 overs, on one good ankle, for just 1 wicket but on any other day would have got a bag. Rohit kept tantalising the batsmen with his loopy top spinners to take 3/18 off 20 overs while evergreen Peter Foley bowled 24.3 overs for 6/25. Ginninderra took 95 overs to pass the ANU total with the last pair adding 9 runs in 12 overs (all edges) with Cam countlessly beating the bat and the stumps. In the end a frustrating. but fighting, end to the season.

John Martin, with 301 runs at 25.1, capably and reliably opened the batting, with captain Greg Badcock, 283 runs @ 25.7 and Graham Fifield, 267 runs @ 22.3, offering solid middle order support. Cam Fox scored 240 runs @ 30.0, including a century, and took 10 wickets at 27.9. Peter Foley with 24 wkts @ 13.5 was the leading wicket taker ahead of Stuart Cameron with 14 wkts @ 19.4. 
Fifth Grade was a completely different team to the group that had participated in the previous years' finals. A mixture of returning players, new players and players from Sixth grade trying their skills on turf, found the going tough against some of the established teams. Coupled with a high player turnover and periodic abscences the team never really got together and finished out of the four. 
Leading batsman was Sean Gourlay with 239 runs @ 26.6 with Myles Burleigh not far behind with 198 runs @ 15.2. Tim Chandler took 15 wkts @ 33.4 and Umair Yousaf 12 wkts @ 11.1. 
Sixth Grade was the other men's team to do well finishing with the Minor Premiership. Unfortunately they exited the finals series in "straight sets". Against Workers they came up against a rising star who scored 102 out of a total of 6/270. A bright opening partnership of 91 between Craig Reiher and Pat Aitkenhead was foolowed by regular wickets as the asking run rate proved too hard to maintain. In the second chance Final, ANU never recovered from 4/35 to only reach 132 off their 45 overs. Barton easily chased the total losing only 3 wickets.

Captain, Liam Cosgrave, led from the front with 380 runs @ 34.5 with all-rounder (bats, bowls, keeps) Toby Dalwood 353 runs @ 25.2 and up and comer Pat Aitkenhead 311 runs @ 28.3 offering solid support. Ragu Dang scored a very hard hitting century. In the bowling, Toby Dalwood took 33 wickets @ 10.7 and Liam Cosgrave 18 wkts @ 11.7. 
The Women's competition was somewhat disjointed with frequent breaks to avoid clashes with the Meteors and a mixture of competitive and uncompetitive matches. The leading players played in a 4 team Premier League where they did not play as club teams but under a sponsors banner. (In my opinion this lowers the appeal of the competition.) In the Premier League the team that the ANU women played for won the premiership. In the club competition ANU missed out on the 3 team final series. 
Kate O'Sullivan scored 175 runs at the excellent average of 58.3 just ahead of Jane Curnow's 158 runs @ 52.7 and Peta Guy 153 runs @ 51.0. Fiona White took 10 wkts @ 6.1 and Jane Curnow 9 wkts @ 7.8. 
On the social side ANU continued their regular annual match against the Bradman XI with a win in Bowral and added a new fixture with a Twenty20 match against Radford. Both teams had a collection of wise heads and a smattering of young talent and came away with 2 comprehensive wins. 
During the off-season ANUCC decided to assist the ANU SRA with hosting a social T20 competition at the new Willows facility and also to start a Milo in2Cricket centre.
